Net migration to UK plunges nearly 50% as visa rules tighten
Net migration to the UK dropped to 171,000 in the 12 months to end-December 2025, from 331,000 a year earlier, ONS data showed, reflecting stricter visa policies. The decline follows bans on dependents for most international students and higher salary thresholds introduced since 2024. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood welcomed the progress but acknowledged more work was needed, while employers voiced concerns over labor shortages.
