Afghanistan's Emerald Miners Toil With Primitive Tools but Still Draw Global Buyers

In Afghanistan's Panjshir Valley, more than 15,000 miners extract high-quality emeralds using only basic tools such as shovels, pickaxes and hammers. Despite the harsh conditions, the gems attract international buyers, and this year's auction revenue has reached nearly 400 million afghani. Officials say the industry lacks investment and processing facilities, while miners call for modern equipment to improve safety and productivity.
