Paraguay’s president quits after millions of people’s savings frozen in bank crisis
Paraguay's rightwing president Santiago Peña resigned on Thursday after a banking crisis centered on Ueno Bank, which the central bank placed into resolution over insolvency, freezing deposits of 3 million customers. The collapse triggered mass protests, arrests of bank executives and an impeachment push that gained broad support, with Vice-President Pedro Alliana automatically assuming the presidency until 2028.
