Pressure mounts on Mexico's president as two former officials surrender to US over cartel links
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum denies any ties between her Morena party and organized crime after two high-ranking former officials from Sinaloa state surrendered to US authorities on charges of links to the Sinaloa drug cartel. The voluntary surrender of the ex-officials, who were indicted along with eight others including Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, has intensified pressure on Sheinbaum's government. Analysts say the detentions help Washington build a case against Governor Rocha Moya and could expose more officials from the ruling party.
