Paraguay’s Santiago Pena under arrest, new president Pedro Alliana sworn in
Pedro Alliana was sworn in as Paraguay's 53rd president on Friday after the Senate voted 44-1 to impeach Santiago Pena over the collapse of Ueno Bank, a major lender holding roughly two-thirds of Paraguayan adults as customers. Prosecutors are seeking Pena's arrest on suspicion of breach of public trust and other crimes, and an arrest warrant was also issued for former central bank chief Carlos Carvallo. The scandal has left millions without account access and triggered criminal charges against at least 27 people.
