Nishiyama Becomes First Female Player to Qualify for Official Shogi Professional Ranks

Tomoka Nishiyama became the first female player to qualify for shogi's official professional "kishi" ranks, the game's top professional tier, which is open to both men and women but had never before included a woman. The qualification marks a historic milestone for the traditional Japanese mind sport, though details of her formal entry have not been fully announced.
