How elderly ‘unsung heroes’ powered Lula’s historic fightback in Brazil
Older voters in Brazil are credited with helping President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva overturn a first-round deficit and defeat far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro in the October runoff. More than 1 million elderly people who skipped the first round voted in the second, and 1.4 million of the 3 million extra runoff voters were over 70. Lula himself tearfully thanked them at his 81st birthday party, while analysts caution that fear of Bolsonaro was likely the bigger driver of the swing.
