Ousted Paraguay president under house arrest after banking crisis leaves 60% of country unable to access accounts
Paraguay's President Santiago Peña was impeached by Congress and placed under house arrest within minutes, following a severe banking crisis triggered by the suspension of Ueno bank over irregularities. The move froze accounts of roughly 2.9 million people — about 60% of the adult population — sparking nationwide protests and violent clashes with police. Vice-President Pedro Alliana was sworn in as the new leader while prosecutors investigate Peña for illicit enrichment, money laundering and influence peddling.
