Former Belgian diplomat dies before trial in 1961 killing of Congo leader
Étienne Davignon, a 93-year-old former Belgian diplomat and the last person under investigation in the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, has died before facing trial. The killing of Congo's first prime minister in 1961 remains a dark chapter in colonial history. Davignon, who denied any wrongdoing, was awaiting an appeal against a court order to stand trial on war crimes charges.
