Seychelles Records 180,000 Aldabra Giant Tortoises, Highest Ever Counted
A major survey on Seychelles' Aldabra atoll has found roughly 180,000 Aldabra giant tortoises, the highest number ever recorded for the species, confirming one of the Indian Ocean's biggest conservation successes. The population was down to fewer than 1,000 in the 19th century before a recovery programme turned the atoll into a strict nature reserve and UNESCO site.
