Lamine Yamal has racked up eight goals and nine assists in 10 games for Barcelona this season, a combined 17 goal contributions that outstrip Lionel Messi's 14 during his first Ballon d'Or-winning campaign at 19. The 19-year-old's form has drawn comparisons with the game's greatest prodigies as he chases the Ballon d'Or.
Eight weeks into the club football season, Lamine Yamal continues to dazzle with a run of peak form in a Barcelona shirt. The Spanish forward has just enjoyed a standout Champions League night, full of jinking runs down the right flank, two assists inside three minutes and the man-of-the-match award.
This is not Yamal's first breakout year; he first caught the eye at 16 during the 2023-24 campaign. But his consistency for both club and country over the past eight weeks has drawn comparisons with the greatest prodigies of recent football history.
Since returning from World Cup glory, Yamal has sustained his explosive form for the Catalan club. In 10 games across all competitions for Barcelona, the 19-year-old has scored eight goals and laid on nine assists, taking his total goal contributions to 17.
By contrast, Barcelona and Argentina legend Lionel Messi managed just 14 contributions (eight goals, six assists) in the 2008-09 season, the campaign in which he won his first Ballon d'Or at 19.
Yamal versus Mbappe
Yamal makes no secret of his ambition to win the Ballon d'Or in 11 days' time, but he faces stiff competition from France star Kylian Mbappe and England captain Harry Kane.
Mbappe, himself the holder of numerous scoring records, leads the attack of Real Madrid, Barcelona's eternal rivals and European football's royal club. Real have not won the Champions League since the 2023-24 season, when they claimed their 15th title, but Mbappe helped them beat Inter Milan in last month's opener.
Before joining Real in 2024, Mbappe scored relentlessly for PSG. He joined the French club at 18 in 2017 and enjoyed major success a year later. At 19, Mbappe scored 12 goals and added four assists in his first 10 games, a total of 16 contributions — one fewer than Yamal over the same number of matches.
Messi the master and Yamal the pupil
Comparing Yamal's entire career with Messi's is unfair, but the Spaniard is following in the footsteps of the club legend. Both boast a notable statistical quirk: a brace inside their first five La Liga games. Messi did it at 25 in the 2012-13 season; Yamal has repeated the feat this term.
In April 2007, Messi scored his famous solo goal against Getafe, running from his own half past five players in front of the Camp Nou. Three months later, Lamine Yamal was born, and not long afterwards Messi appeared in a photograph with the infant Yamal — an image that went viral this year.
The attention peaked at the World Cup when a young Messi was shown bathing baby Yamal in a television commercial. Many initially assumed the image was AI-generated, but it actually dates from 2007. At a UNICEF fundraising photo shoot at the Camp Nou, Messi, then 20, met Yamal at five months old.
The two Barcelona stars faced each other in the World Cup final on 19 July. Messi left the pitch in tears as Yamal's Spain lifted the trophy, but the pair had shared a warm embrace beforehand. Yamal later revealed what he told Messi on the pitch in New York: "I told him thank you for everything he has given to football."
Ahead of the final, attention focused on the duel between 39-year-old Messi and 19-year-old Yamal, billed as master against pupil. Nineteen years after that iconic photograph, Yamal is now chasing Messi's milestones at Barcelona.
Barcelona coach: 'Everyone is watching Lamine'
This season, Yamal's remarkable scoring tally outstrips the output of three other La Liga sides. His seven league goals are more than Valencia (six), Getafe (four) and Malaga (four) have managed as teams.
The forward's form and skill have not escaped the notice of coach Hansi Flick. After a 4-1 win over Galatasaray in Istanbul, the German manager was full of praise for his No 10.
"When you see the chances Lamine creates in every training session, the same happens in matches. I have many top-quality players. Everyone is watching Lamine — that is only natural," Flick said. "It is fantastic to have players like that; he turned the game for us."
