A shooting at an apartment building in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Monday afternoon (September 2, local time) left at least two people dead and three police officers wounded.
According to police spokesman Garret Parten, authorities received a call reporting gunfire at an apartment building in the city center at 4:30 p.m. local time (10:30 p.m. GMT). Officers arrived at the scene shortly afterward and found the victims.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene. Four others were taken to hospitals, where one of them succumbed to their injuries. Three police officers, two of whom had been shot, were also transported to hospitals. All three were reported in stable condition, according to Hennepin County Medical Center.
The suspected gunman also died. Spokesman Parten said it was unclear how the suspect died. The motive for the attack remains under investigation.
Videos posted on social media showed officers aiming their weapons at an apartment building near the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz thanked emergency personnel and said state officials were on the scene to support local police in their response. On the social media platform X, Walz wrote: "Grateful for law enforcement actively working to keep people safe in downtown Minneapolis this afternoon. Minnesota is praying for our first responders."
Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth also expressed condolences and prayers for the victims of what she called "this heinous act."
The Minneapolis shooting occurred on the same day as a shooting at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia. Officials said a 19-year-old man entered the school that morning, wounded a staff member, and then took his own life.
This incident follows a series of mass shootings in Chicago, Illinois, and Trenton, New Jersey, over the weekend that left at least three people dead and 18 injured.
