Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued an official statement on August 3, pledging a "crushing" retaliation against those responsible for the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas's political bureau, in the capital Tehran.
In the communiqué, the IRGC described the assassination as a "serious criminal act" and a blatant violation of Iran's sovereignty and national security. The Guard asserted that the incident would not go unanswered and warned that the enemy would pay a heavy price.
Tehran has accused Israel of orchestrating the killing, which occurred while Haniyeh was in Tehran for President Masoud Pezeshkian's inauguration. Israel has not commented officially, but previously pledged to eliminate Hamas leaders.
