Brazil, June 14, 2026 — Two helicopters collided midair over a western suburb of Rio de Janeiro on Sunday morning, killing all six people on board. Local firefighters confirmed the crash occurred in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes area, where both aircraft fell directly onto the parking lot of an electric car dealership, sparking a fire that engulfed about 20 vehicles.
Fire department spokesman Fabio Contreiras said the blaze was intense and difficult to extinguish due to toxic gases released from the lithium-ion batteries of the electric cars. “This type of battery, when burning, releases highly toxic gases, raising the temperature and severity of the fire. Putting out an electric car fire requires three to four times more water than a conventional vehicle,” Contreiras explained.
According to rescue workers, one helicopter was incinerated among the electric cars, with the bodies of five victims inside. The second helicopter was about 100 meters away, containing only the pilot, who also died. “The area is densely populated. If the helicopters had not hit exactly the parking lot, the death toll could have been much higher,” Contreiras stressed.
Debris scattered hundreds of meters from the scene. Social media images showed a thick column of black smoke rising from the parking lot. Brazilian authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the collision, including reviewing relevant audio recordings and videos.
According to statistics from Brazil’s Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA), prior to this accident, the country had recorded 84 aircraft accidents in 2026. Helicopter crashes are not uncommon in this South American nation.
