On April 12, Russian authorities announced that Ukraine had conducted large-scale drone attacks targeting multiple regions of the country, including the capital Moscow. According to Russia's Defense Ministry, a total of 556 UAVs were intercepted across the nation overnight and into the early morning.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported that a woman was killed when a drone struck a house in Khimki, north of Moscow. Rescue teams are searching for another potential victim trapped under debris. Two other men died in the village of Pogorelki in Mytishchi district. Vorobyov also noted that apartment buildings and infrastructure were damaged in the attacks.
Russia's state news agency TASS quoted Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin as saying air defense systems shot down 81 drones targeting the capital overnight. Sobyanin said 12 people were injured, most near the Moscow oil refinery, and confirmed the plant continued operating normally. Three houses were damaged.
Sheremetyevo Airport, Moscow's largest, said drone debris fell on its grounds but caused no damage.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials reported continued Russian strikes in various regions. In Kharkiv province, local authorities said Russian forces attacked 15 settlements over the past 24 hours, wounding seven people. In Kherson province, officials announced a 36-year-old man was killed when a Russian drone dropped explosives on the village of Inhulets on the morning of April 12.
The attacks come after U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin suggested the conflict may be nearing an end. Last week, Trump expressed confidence that Moscow and Kyiv would “soon reach an agreement” to halt the fighting.
