Australian police confirmed that a man died after a shark attack on Sunday (May 25) off the coast of Queensland, in the northeast of the country.
According to a Queensland Police spokesperson, the victim was bitten near Kennedy Shoal, a shallow coral reef about 45 km from the shore. The man was brought ashore shortly after and was taken by ambulance, but did not survive. Police have not released the victim's identity.
Local authorities have closed beaches in the area to assess safety conditions, according to local media.
The incident comes just over a week after another fatal attack by a large white shark. On May 16, a 38-year-old man died after being bitten by a shark near the city of Perth, on Australia's west coast.
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the majority of shark attacks occur along the country's east and southeast coasts, averaging about 20 incidents per year.
