Spain National Team at the 2026 World Cup: Stars, Schedule, and Title Hopes
Al Jazeera Staff
The reigning European champions boast a bright generation of young talent, but can they repeat the Euro-World Cup double after 16 years of waiting? Spain are unbeaten in 28 official matches since March 2024, yet have not advanced beyond the round of 16 at the World Cup since their 2010 triumph.
World Cup appearances: 16
Best result: Champions (2010)
First appearance: 1934 (Italy)
Top scorer: David Villa (9 goals)
All-time appearances record: Sergio Busquets, Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos (17 matches)
Player to watch: Lamine Yamal
FIFA ranking: 2
The European champions now boast the best Spanish squad since the golden generation of 2008-2012. Under coach Luis de la Fuente, the team has shed the traditional tiki-taka style for a faster, more direct approach.
Spain are unbeaten in 28 official matches since March 2024, losing only on penalties to Portugal in the 2025 Nations League final. However, pressure mounts as the team has not advanced beyond the round of 16 at the World Cup since their sole title in 2010.
Key figure: Lamine Yamal, 19, is the most exciting player. At Euro 2024, he provided four assists and scored a spectacular goal against France. This season, Yamal has netted 16 times in La Liga and five in the Champions League. Still young, he can be prone to pressure and suffered a hamstring injury late in the campaign.
Squad: Eight Barcelona players are included, marking the first time Spain has no Real Madrid players at a World Cup. Coach de la Fuente said: 'I don't look at clubs; I just want players proud to wear the national shirt.'
Midfield: Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d Or winner, is the pivot but has struggled for form after an ACL injury. Alternatives like Martin Zubimendi are still unproven at the top level. Pedri and Fabian Ruiz will partner in midfield, while Mikel Merino also recently underwent foot surgery.
Center-forward position: Spain lack a world-class striker. Alvaro Morata failed to impress at Euro 2024. Mikel Oyarzabal (15 La Liga goals this season) and Ferran Torres (16 goals) are options, but have yet to prove themselves on the big stage.
Group H: Spain face Cape Verde (June 15), Saudi Arabia (June 21), and Uruguay (June 26). Uruguay, coached by Marcelo Bielsa, poses the biggest challenge with stars Federico Valverde, Ronald Araujo, and Darwin Nunez. Spain are expected to advance.
Al Jazeera prediction: Champions. Spain boast the strongest squad in the world with a young, hungry golden generation. If their stars are fit, La Roja will be very hard to stop.
