On August 22, Iran announced the launch of a sea route linking the port of Khorramshahr to the city of Basra in southern Iraq, serving the travel needs of Muslim pilgrims during Arbaeen – one of the world's largest religious events.
The new route is expected to relieve pressure on often-overloaded roads and reduce travel time for pilgrims journeying from Iran to the holy city of Karbala, where commemorations for Imam Hussein take place.
According to Iranian officials, passenger vessels began operating from August 22, with frequency and capacity to be adjusted based on actual demand. The opening of the maritime route also aims to diversify travel options and enhance the experience for pilgrims, as the number of participants in this year's Arbaeen is forecast to hit a record high.
Previously, road and air routes were the main options. The new sea route is seen as a strategic solution, not only to reduce congestion but also to promote transport cooperation between the two neighboring countries during religious festivals.
