Ahead of Monday's World Cup round of 16 clash against Brazil, Japan captain Takumi Minamino expressed confidence in his team's ability to pull off an upset. He insisted the squad is ready to take on one of the tournament's heaviest favorites.
“We can create another shock,” Minamino said at the pre-match press conference. “Brazil are a strong opponent, but football always has its surprises. We have prepared thoroughly and believe in our own ability.”
Minamino's comments came after Japan's impressive friendly win over Tunisia, in which striker Ayase Ueda scored twice. However, Brazil boast a star-studded lineup and are in scintillating form, leading pundits to consider Japan the clear underdog.
“Brazil are not just Neymar or Vinicius Junior; they are a strong collective. But we also have a specific plan ready. One match, 90 minutes, and anything can happen,” Minamino stressed.
The Japan-Brazil match is expected to draw special attention, as Japan have produced surprises at previous World Cups. The Samurai Blue hope to continue their fairy tale in Qatar.
