The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Friday (August 21, 2026) that the country had completed construction of a new railway station at the Wonsan-Kalma resort, located on the nation's east coast.
According to the announcement, the new station is part of the overall development project for the Wonsan-Kalma coastal tourism zone, a key element in Pyongyang's strategy to boost the tourism industry. The railway station was built to improve connectivity between the capital and the resort, facilitating the movement of both visitors and goods.
Wonsan-Kalma is one of North Korea's flagship tourism projects pursued in recent years. The resort is situated in Wonsan city, Kangwon Province, with the goal of attracting both domestic and international tourists, particularly from Russia and China.
The completion of the railway station is seen as a significant step in transport infrastructure, linking the resort to the national rail network. Previously, Pyongyang has repeatedly stressed the importance of developing infrastructure to spur tourism, a sector that has been severely impacted by international sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Observers suggest this move reflects North Korea's efforts to secure legitimate foreign currency earnings through tourism, while also improving the country's image amid ongoing sanctions.
