President Donald Trump has suspended the military operation "Project Freedom" to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, citing requests from Pakistan and other nations and progress in talks with Iran. The decision aims to allow diplomatic efforts to finalize a comprehensive agreement with Tehran while maintaining the blockade.
U.S. President Donald Trump on April 9 announced the suspension of the military operation called "Project Freedom," aimed at moving stranded vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. The decision came after he received requests from Pakistan and several other countries.
On the social media platform Truth Social, President Trump wrote: "Based on the request of Pakistan and other countries, along with the great military success we have achieved in the campaign against Iran, and the fact that there has been great progress toward a comprehensive and final agreement with representatives of Iran, we have agreed that, while the blockade remains fully in place, Project Freedom (moving ships through the Strait of Hormuz) will be suspended for a short time to see if the agreement can be finalized and signed."
Earlier, the U.S. administration had launched a military operation to reopen this strategic sea lane after Iran imposed a blockade. However, with the new statement, Trump signaled that Washington is willing to create diplomatic space to reach a comprehensive deal with Tehran.
No further details are currently available on the negotiation process or a specific timeline for the suspension of the operation.
