Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on August 10 accused Israel of carrying out "genocide" in the Gaza Strip with US complicity, and criticized Muslim nations for not acting forcefully enough to end the conflict.
Speaking at a press conference in Tehran, Pezeshkian said what is happening in Gaza amounts to "crimes against humanity" and called on the international community to take tougher measures to protect the Palestinian people.
According to Pezeshkian, Washington has supplied weapons and political support to Israel, making it complicit in military actions that have killed and injured civilians. He also expressed frustration that many Muslim countries have yet to respond forcefully enough, despite having voiced opposition.
Iran has long been one of the harshest critics of Israel's military campaign in Gaza. Tehran backs armed groups opposed to Israel in the region, including Hamas and Hezbollah, and has repeatedly called for Muslim unity.
Israel rejects accusations of violating international law, saying its military operations target Hamas following the October 7, 2023 attack and that it works to minimize civilian casualties. The United States also denies any role as an accomplice, stressing that it is pushing diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and find a solution for the hostages.
The conflict has entered its 11th month, causing heavy casualties and sparking protests in many parts of the world. Ceasefire talks remain deadlocked, while the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate.
