SEOUL - South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said Wednesday that the country should identify and nurture new growth drivers in the era of artificial intelligence (AI) and beyond, positioning seven future industries as engines for future economic growth and important national strategic assets.
Speaking at a meeting, Lee stressed the importance of investing in and developing emerging technology sectors to maintain South Korea's competitive edge on the international stage. According to him, these industries not only play a key role in economic growth but also serve as a foundation for the nation's security and sustainable development amid global transformation.
The statement comes as South Korea seeks to bolster its technological capabilities and reduce reliance on external resources, particularly in areas such as AI, semiconductors, batteries, and biotechnology, which are seen as key pillars of the future economy.
Experts say identifying the seven strategic industries will help South Korea focus resources, implement appropriate support policies, and foster public-private cooperation to achieve long-term goals.
