A panel of Brazil's Supreme Court voted to convict Eduardo Bolsonaro for seeking U.S. intervention in the trial of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, over an alleged coup plot.
All four judges on the panel supported the verdict on Tuesday, with sentencing discussions expected later in the day.
Brazil's Attorney General's Office accused Eduardo Bolsonaro of trying to persuade the U.S. administration to aid his father's case by imposing sanctions on the court's judges and tariffs on Brazilian goods.
Eduardo Bolsonaro, a former congressman, moved to the U.S. in 2025, months before the trial that convicted the right-wing former president for plotting a coup. In the U.S., he actively built support, especially from the Trump administration, for his father.
In a statement after the verdict, Eduardo Bolsonaro said he was not properly notified about the court's legal proceedings. He told Reuters his work in the U.S. was not aimed at seeking a pardon for his father from Brazilian courts, but rather at compelling the Supreme Court to sanction officials he claimed were violating Brazil's constitution.
