Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has called a snap election after parliament rejected housing support measures proposed by his minority government.
Speaking on Monday, Sanchez said the vote would be held on November 29.
The government's defeat in parliament on Friday was one of a series of recent political setbacks for the centre-left leader, and was followed by large protests across the country over the housing crisis.
The Spanish government said more than 70,000 people took part in a housing protest in Madrid on Saturday.
Anger has been mounting since late last month, when an 87-year-old woman, Marai del Carmen Abascal, was forced out of the home she had lived in for 70 years in Madrid after an international investment fund bought her building and raised her rent.
This is breaking news.
