Romania's pro-European coalition government led by PM Ilie Bolojan has been toppled in a no-confidence vote, sparking fears of a fiscal crisis. The motion was backed by 281 lawmakers, with only four against.
Romania's pro-European coalition government collapsed after a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, sparking concerns over a fiscal crisis in the Eastern European country.
The move was initiated last week when the left-wing Social Democratic Party (PSD), which left the ruling coalition at the end of April, along with the hardline opposition Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR), submitted a no-confidence motion to Parliament.
Following a parliamentary debate on Tuesday, 281 lawmakers voted in favor of the motion, with only four against. Lawmakers from Bolojan's center-right National Liberal Party (PNL), the Save Romania Union, and the Hungarian minority party UDMR did not vote.
The political crisis leaves Romania facing potential fiscal instability, as financial markets worry about the new government's ability to pass necessary budget reforms.
