UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on 21 June after days of intense pressure from his own Labour Party. He said a new leader would be appointed before Parliament resumes in September.
“I will step down,” Starmer told reporters outside 10 Downing Street in London on Monday.
In 2024, Starmer won the largest majority for Labour since 1997, ending 14 years of Conservative-led government. However, opinion polls have shown the 63-year-old former lawyer remains unpopular with voters due to a series of policy missteps and scandals.
Pressure on Starmer to resign intensified from within Labour after his rival, Andy Burnham, scored a decisive victory in a by-election in England's northwest, winning a seat in Parliament.
