Zion Suzuki made history as the first Japanese goalkeeper to play in the Premier League. He made his debut for Aston Villa in Monday's 1-0 loss to reigning champions Arsenal.
The 23-year-old was named in the starting lineup for the round-two Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium. Despite conceding a goal, Suzuki's performance was regarded as solid under heavy pressure from the home side.
With his appearance in this match, Suzuki surpassed his fellow countrymen to become the first Japanese player to stand between the posts in England's top flight. Previously, several Japanese players had featured in the Premier League, but none had taken on the goalkeeper role.
Suzuki's transfer to Aston Villa was completed earlier this year. He impressed in the Belgian league before moving to England. Following his debut, Suzuki is expected to continue as the first-choice goalkeeper in the club's upcoming matches at Villa Park.
