The wheat harvest is underway in Khuzestan Province, southwestern Iran, with expected production exceeding 1.2 million tonnes. Farmers using modern machinery aim to complete harvesting by June, supported by improved seeds and irrigation.
Khuzestan Province, one of Iran's largest wheat baskets, is entering the peak of its winter-spring wheat harvest. According to data from the Provincial Agricultural Organization, the area under wheat cultivation this year is about 220,000 hectares, a slight increase from last year.
Golden ripened wheat fields stretch across districts such as Shushtar, Dezful, and Ahvaz. Farmers are using modern combine harvesters to ensure progress and reduce losses.
Mr. Mohammad Reza Mohammadi, Deputy Director of Provincial Agriculture, said: "Average yield is estimated at 5.5 tonnes per hectare, thanks to the use of drought-resistant wheat varieties and improved irrigation systems. We aim to complete the harvest by the end of June."
Khuzestan accounts for approximately 15% of the national wheat output. This year's harvest is expected to exceed 1.2 million tonnes, contributing to food security and reducing grain imports.
Local authorities have also set up temporary storage purchasing points to help farmers sell quickly and avoid price undercutting. Many agricultural cooperatives signed product offtake contracts at the start of the season.
