MALE, Maldives – Three Finnish divers on Tuesday (May 14) will attempt to recover the bodies of two of four Italians who died deep inside a submerged cave in a Maldives atoll, five days after they were reported missing.
According to local authorities, the incident occurred when the group of Italian tourists was exploring an underwater cave but encountered difficulties and could not resurface. Rescue teams located the bodies of all four victims, but bringing them to the surface has been challenging due to complex terrain and dangerous currents.
The Finnish dive team, with deep expertise in underwater rescue operations, will use specialized equipment to access the cave area. Maldives officials said the recovery mission is expected to take several hours and depends on weather conditions and the team's safety.
Italy's embassy in the Maldives is coordinating with local authorities to support the victims' families. The accident has shocked the local community and the international diving fraternity, raising concerns about safety during underwater cave exploration in the region.
Maldivian police and coast guard units are also on standby to assist the recovery mission. The identities of the deceased have not been publicly released pending notification of next of kin.
