On May 4, the US military announced the discovery of the body of a soldier who went missing near cliffs at Cap Draa, Morocco, during the African Lion exercise. Moroccan forces found the remains on Saturday (May 3) in waters less than 1.6 km from the site where he went missing on May 2.
The soldier was identified as 2nd Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., a platoon leader in an artillery unit. The US military said another soldier remains missing and search operations are ongoing.
The soldiers were participating in African Lion, the largest exercise of US Africa Command involving US forces, NATO allies, and African partner nations. Most of the exercise takes place in Morocco with about 5,000 personnel from more than 40 nations, according to US Africa Command.
