In southwestern Iran, local authorities and religious organizations have coordinated to operate 1,000 service stations (mawkeb) along pilgrimage routes during the Arbaeen season, one of the largest religious events for Shia Muslims.
These stations provide food, water, rest areas, and medical services for pilgrims—who undertake a multi-day walking journey from various points in Iran and neighboring countries to the shrine of Imam Hussein in Karbala, Iraq, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
Arbaeen occurs 40 days after Ashura, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussein in the 7th century. Every year, tens of millions of people participate in the pilgrimage, making it one of the largest peaceful gatherings in the world.
The establishment of 1,000 mawkeb stations in southwest Iran reflects a massive logistical effort by local authorities and communities to ensure the safety, health, and spiritual well-being of pilgrims throughout their long journey.
