British cyclist Josh Tarling will take part in the Vuelta a Espana (Tour of Spain) starting Saturday, just over a week after his younger brother Finlay died in a crash while racing in Portugal.
Finlay Tarling, 19, passed away following a "serious accident" on stage 8 of the Tour of Portugal on August 14. The young rider competed for the UCI Continental team NSN Development.
According to local broadcaster RTP, which aired the race, Finlay was involved in a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle unrelated to the event.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Netcompany-Ineos team confirmed that Josh — a time-trial specialist — is on the start list for the Vuelta a Espana, scheduled from August 22 to September 13.
Team manager Geraint Thomas said the team fully supports Josh's decision, while his mother, Dawn, said the family also stands behind the 22-year-old's participation in the Grand Tour.
"Finlay was incredibly proud of his older brother and would be glued to the TV cheering every time he raced," Dawn wrote on Instagram. "So Josh has chosen to honor that love and pride by doing what Fin always loved watching him do."
