At least 11 people were killed and 27 injured when a tourist coach collided with a trailer on a highway in western Turkey, according to local authorities.
The crash occurred near a toll station in Akhisar, on the Gebze-Orhangazi-Izmir highway in Manisa province, on Sunday morning. The Manisa governor's office said authorities received reports of the collision shortly after 11 a.m. local time.
The injured were taken to local hospitals, including the coach driver. He was later detained by police after being discharged from hospital.
Images from the scene showed green body bags lined up along the roadside beside the overturned coach, its rear section heavily damaged. The trailer, which appeared to be carrying wooden planks, had also overturned.
In a post on X, Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci described the victims as Turkish citizens, though authorities have not confirmed whether any foreign nationals were among the dead.
Manisa Governor Vahdettin Ozkan visited the scene as rescue teams cleared the wreckage. "Work at the scene is currently being carried out under the coordination of the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office," he said. "We are experiencing painfully how important it is to strictly comply with traffic rules."
