Mixed martial arts (MMA) star Ronda Rousey defeated Gina Carano at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, on May 16, 2026. The bout ended just 17 seconds in as Rousey took down her opponent and locked in her trademark armbar submission.
Despite heavy promotion, the fight was brief and left fans disappointed. Rousey quickly took Carano to the ground and secured the armbar to finish the contest almost immediately.
Both American fighters — Rousey, 39, and Carano, 44 — are considered two of the most important female athletes in MMA history, having helped popularize the sport more than a decade ago.
Carano, who transitioned to a Hollywood acting career, had not competed since 2009 before this featherweight bout. Rousey, an Olympic judo bronze medalist in 2008 and a former UFC superstar, retired in 2016 after back-to-back losses to Amanda Nunes and Holly Holm.
Both fighters were lured back to the cage by a lucrative payday from Netflix, with each expected to earn several million dollars. Rousey (13-2-0 MMA) secured her 10th career win by armbar, returning to action after leaving MMA in December 2016.
After the fight, Rousey insisted this was a one-time comeback and ruled out any further bouts. "Gina is the only one who could bring me back to MMA — she's my hero," Rousey said. "She changed my world, and we changed the world. I'll never forget that."
When asked about extending her return, Rousey said: "There's no way to end better than this. I want more kids, I've got to cook."
Carano (7-2-0 MMA) had been inactive from the sport since August 2009. She acknowledged the fight was too fast and regretted not being able to do more. "I feel fantastic," Carano said. "I wanted to fight, but I didn't get the chance. She trained and had a game plan. I have so much love and respect for her."
Carano, who lost more than 100 pounds (45 kg) in the two years leading up to the fight, was uncertain about a return to MMA. "Right now, just getting into the cage is a victory. Coming here after 17 years is a victory. Fighting a legend is a victory," she said.
