Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after leaving the national team camp amid a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his place in the lineup.
In a notice issued Monday by the FPF disciplinary council, the charges against the 41-year-old forward were upheld in full, along with a fine of 255 euros (about $285).
The episode began when Ronaldo left Portugal's base in Copenhagen ahead of the Nations League match against Denmark earlier this month. The forward accused Jesus of twice breaking promises about his role after he was left out of the match against Norway.
Jesus denied any agreement had been made with Ronaldo but left open the possibility of his return following Portugal's 2-1 win.
The disciplinary council concluded that Ronaldo had acted intentionally in breach of Article 160(1) of the federation's disciplinary regulations. Proceedings were opened on October 9, based on incidents reported two days earlier.
The notice did not specify which matches or activities the suspension applies to, nor whether time already served under a provisional suspension counts toward the 30 days.
Ronaldo later apologized for failing to acknowledge fans' support after the Norway match and for leaving his teammates, while insisting he remains ready to play once any sanctions arising from the case are completed.
FPF President Pedro Proenca said the entire federation wants Ronaldo back in the national team once the matter is resolved.
