Real Madrid beat RB Leipzig 4-1 for their third straight Champions League win. Bernardo Silva, Arda Guler, Kylian Mbappe and Yan Diomande scored for Jose Mourinho's side, who now turn to Sunday's El Clasico against Barcelona.
Real Madrid made it three wins from three Champions League matches by beating RB Leipzig 4-1 on Wednesday. Kylian Mbappe and Yan Diomande were among the scorers for Jose Mourinho's side.
Bernardo Silva opened the scoring for Real Madrid from close range late in a tightly contested first half. Arda Guler doubled the lead for the 15-time European champions shortly after the second half began.
Mbappe added a third with a curling strike, before Tidiam Gomis pulled one back for the visitors. Diomande sealed the 4-1 win with a late volley into the top corner.
It was Real Madrid's fourth consecutive victory in all competitions, giving the team momentum ahead of Sunday's La Liga El Clasico against Barcelona.
After two seasons without a major trophy and an inconsistent start in domestic competition, Real Madrid can at least point to a perfect European record, in contrast to Barcelona following their defeat by Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
Mourinho started Vinicius, who is serving a four-match La Liga suspension, on the left flank and left Diomande — the former Leipzig winger — on the bench despite his rising form. The Portuguese coach also brought Bernardo Silva and Eduardo Camavinga into midfield and deployed midfielder Federico Valverde at right back, as he had in Sunday's win over Sevilla.
RB Leipzig created the first big chance through a Romulo Cardoso effort, but goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced an excellent save.
Vinicius, improved on a poor showing against Roma the previous week, forced Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt into a diving stop.
Real Madrid gained the advantage late in the first half when Valverde drilled a low cross for Guler to shoot; Vandevoordt parried the ball but could not control it, allowing Silva to pounce and slot home. It was the former Manchester City midfielder's first goal for Real Madrid since joining in the summer.
Vandevoordt made another good save from a powerful Valverde shot before Guler made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute. Jude Bellingham crossed to the far post, Mbappe headed the ball across goal, and Guler held off a defender before turning and finishing.
Mbappe later finished into the side netting from a Bellingham pass as Real Madrid looked to extend their lead.
Mourinho brought on Diomande for Vinicius in the final 20 minutes. The Brazilian looked frustrated on the bench, knowing he cannot play again until November 4, when Real Madrid visit AEK Athens.
Diomande, Real Madrid's record 140 million euro (USD 157 million) signing, set up Mbappe on the edge of the box for the third goal. The French forward curled a fine finish beyond the goalkeeper.
RB Leipzig quickly grabbed a consolation when Dean Huijsen lost concentration, allowing Gomis to beat Courtois.
Diomande wrapped up the scoring with a powerful volley from a Brahim Diaz pass that flew into the top corner, marking his third goal in his last four appearances.
