On November 12, the Sudanese army declared it had retaken a strategic area in Blue Nile state from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as fighting between the two sides continues since April 2023.
According to an official statement, military units regained control of the area after hours of intense combat. This is considered a key tactical success, helping the army consolidate its position in a resource-rich and geopolitically sensitive region in southeastern Sudan.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF has killed thousands and displaced over 5 million people. Fighting has been concentrated mainly in the capital Khartoum and regions such as Darfur, Kordofan, and now Blue Nile.
Blue Nile state, which borders Ethiopia and South Sudan, holds strategic importance for hydropower and agriculture. The army's recapture of this area could shift the battlefield dynamics, but analysts say the conflict is unlikely to end soon as neither side shows signs of concessions.
