On February 1, the Palestinian Health Ministry in Ramallah confirmed that Israeli forces killed Nour al-Din Kamal Hassan Fayyad, 34, at the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. The incident was described as a targeted attack on the camp.
The Israeli military said soldiers opened fire after the victim attempted to "infiltrate" the area of the Jenin camp where troops were operating and where entry is prohibited.
Since January 2024, Israel has launched major military operations targeting Palestinian refugee camps in the northern West Bank. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said the operations in Jenin and Tulkarem camps have displaced 40,000 Palestinians.
On the same day, the Wafa news agency reported that Israeli forces detained a Palestinian youth after assaulting him at the Shu’fat refugee camp northeast of Jerusalem, and another in the village of Zawata west of Nablus. Another Palestinian was attacked by Israeli settlers in the town of Sinjil.
Israeli forces also raided the cities of Tubas and Qalqilya, the towns of Tammun and Zaatara (east of Bethlehem), and the village of Deir Jarir (east of Ramallah). In Turmus Aya town, northeast of Ramallah, Israeli settlers set fire to a farming shed and painted racist slogans.
Senior UN official Ramiz Alakbarov, Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, condemned the torching of a mosque and several vehicles in Jibiya village. Masked assailants set them on fire and sprayed graffiti in Hebrew.
"Attacks on places of worship and civilian property are unacceptable, undermining stability, dignity, and freedom of worship," Alakbarov stressed. He called for an immediate and transparent investigation, demanding that all perpetrators be held accountable. "These attacks must stop."
