Former France midfielder Paul Pogba is facing an uncertain future at Monaco after suffering a new injury to his left thigh during the team's first training session at St George's Park, the English national football centre, on Tuesday (local time).
The setback comes just days after Monaco defeated Liverpool in a friendly on Sunday. Notably, the 33-year-old had only recently returned to full team training following an extended period of treatment for a right knee injury.
According to multiple sources, the fresh injury suggests Pogba remains far from the fitness level required for competitive action as the French season approaches. To date, the former Manchester United star has played only one half of football in Monaco's pre-season friendlies.
In light of the situation, speculation has emerged that Monaco are in talks with Pogba's representatives over the possibility of terminating his contract, which is set to expire at the end of next season.
Pogba served an 18-month suspension from an initial four-year ban for doping violations before returning to action for Monaco in Ligue 1 in November 2025. Last season, he made just six league appearances, totalling 115 minutes.
Pogba began his career at Manchester United before leaving under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012. He then enjoyed a successful spell at Juventus, winning four consecutive Serie A titles and reaching the Champions League final, before returning to United in 2016 for what was then a world-record fee of $120.2 million.
He rejoined Juventus on a free transfer in 2022 and was released by the club in 2024 during his ban. Monaco handed the Seine-et-Marne-born player his first opportunity to play in his home country in 2025.
Pogba last played for France in 2022, in a 5-0 win over South Africa. That was his 91st and final appearance for the national team, for whom he scored 11 goals. The highlight of his career came when France beat Croatia 4-2 in the 2018 World Cup final in Russia, where he scored his side's third goal.
