Kurdistan Region Vice President Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa said on Feb. 12 that Iran will not allow external plots to sow division between Tehran and the Kurdistan Regional Government. He made the remarks during a meeting with Iran's Ambassador to Baghdad, Mohammad Kazem Al-e Sadegh, in Erbil, the regional capital.
In his statement, Sheikh Mustafa emphasized: "Iran is an important neighbor with a clear stance, and it will not allow schemes that undermine the strong relationship between the two sides." He underscored the importance of maintaining dialogue and high-level exchanges to resolve any outstanding issues.
For his part, the Iranian ambassador affirmed that Tehran regards the security of the Kurdistan Region as part of Iran's own security. Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in security, economic, trade, and energy sectors, and discussed potential facilitation of commerce through border crossings.
The meeting took place as both parties work to advance bilateral ties after periods of tension involving Kurdish opposition groups based in the region. Analysts suggest the latest statement aims to consolidate trust and foster more substantive cooperation between the two sides.
