Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev warned on April 17 that Israel is seeking to undermine a potential agreement between the United States and Iran. Speaking at a press conference in Moscow, Medvedev said: “Israel’s actions are aimed at eroding trust and creating new obstacles in the negotiation process. We see this clearly and call on all relevant parties to prevent that scenario.”
Medvedev did not provide specific evidence but emphasized that recent Israeli airstrikes on targets in Syria and Tehran are complicating the situation. He argued that Israel fears a US-Iran deal would weaken Tel Aviv’s confrontational stance toward Tehran.
The warning comes as the US and Iran are engaged in indirect negotiations through Oman, aiming to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA). Russia, a signatory to the JCPOA, supports restoring the agreement and views any acts of sabotage as detrimental to regional stability.
Meanwhile, Israeli officials have repeatedly voiced opposition to any deal permitting Iran to enrich uranium, asserting that Tehran could use its nuclear program to develop weapons. Israel has also attacked Iranian nuclear and military sites in Syria.
Medvedev concluded by urging the international community “not to allow any force to destroy the chance for peace and dialogue.”
