According to the statement, Western countries expressed deep concern over the Iranian government's increased suppression of protesters, detention of political prisoners, and restrictions on citizens' fundamental freedoms. The parties called on Tehran to immediately cease violent actions and strictly adhere to the international human rights conventions to which Iran is a party.
The statement also emphasized the need for an independent monitoring mechanism to investigate allegations of abuses, while urging Iran to facilitate timely access for humanitarian organizations to affected areas. France and its partners affirmed they would continue coordinated efforts to promote accountability in Iran.
Iran has previously dismissed the allegations, calling them interference in internal affairs and a violation of national sovereignty. Tehran insists that its measures are necessary to maintain national security and stability.
This is one of the strongest statements from the West on human rights in Iran since the beginning of the year, reflecting the deep divergence in bilateral relations.
