Government sources in Japan said on August 29 that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is likely to keep Shunichi Suzuki as Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in a leadership reshuffle expected to take place later this month.
The decision comes as Takaichi, who recently assumed the premiership, seeks to stabilize the ruling party's leadership structure ahead of important parliamentary sessions. Keeping Suzuki, a seasoned and experienced figure, is seen as a move to ensure continuity in party operations and close coordination with the government.
Suzuki, 72, has held several key positions in both the government and the LDP, including serving as Finance Minister before taking on the role of Secretary-General. His reappointment is expected to help Takaichi consolidate her authority and focus on policy priorities, particularly in economic and foreign affairs.
According to plans, the LDP leadership reshuffle will be officially announced in the coming days. In addition to the Secretary-General post, other senior party positions will also be under review, as public attention turns to the policy direction of the new cabinet under Takaichi.
