An explosion struck a school in the Dasht-e-Barchi area of western Kabul, Afghanistan, at approximately 4:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, injuring multiple people.
Initial reports indicate the blast occurred at the private educational institution "Shama-e Hidayat" in the Mahdia neighborhood. Several students were injured and transported to Alami Hospital, according to the Hasht-e Subh Daily newspaper.
Witnesses at the scene said most of the injured were students, as the explosion happened near the end of the school day. Video footage released by London-based Afghanistan International Television showed crowds gathering around ambulances near the site.
Kabul Now news agency and TOLOnews, citing sources, reported that the explosion was believed to have been caused by a hand grenade.
So far, the cause of the explosion remains undetermined, and it is unclear whether anyone was killed. The Taliban administration has not issued any comment, and international media have not been able to independently verify the information.
Dasht-e-Barchi is predominantly home to the Hazara community, an ethnic minority in Afghanistan. The Islamic State group's affiliate in Khorasan Province (ISIS-K) has previously carried out attacks targeting Hazaras as well as other religious minority groups, particularly at mosques, schools, and workplaces.
