TOKYO — The Japanese government on October 9 asked Russia to facilitate access by Japanese officials to a Japanese citizen being held in detention, according to Japanese officials.
Sources said Japan conveyed the request to Russian authorities and is working to gather more information about the detainee's identity, circumstances, and status.
There is no detailed information so far about when, where, or why the Japanese citizen was detained. Russia has not given an official response to the request.
It is the latest case involving a Japanese citizen in detention in Russia, at a time when bilateral relations between the two countries remain troubled by unresolved issues.
