Speaking to senior officers of the Japan Self-Defense Forces on August 25, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi emphasized the goal of speeding up the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and the deployment of unmanned military assets. The move comes ahead of the planned revision of three key national security documents expected to be completed by the end of this year.
According to Prime Minister Takaichi's statement, accelerating the adoption of new technologies is viewed as a top priority in the strategy to strengthen defense capabilities. She stressed the importance of modernizing the forces to adapt to an increasingly complex regional security environment.
The three documents slated for revision include the National Security Strategy, the National Defense Program Guidelines, and the Mid-Term Defense Program. The revisions aim to reflect changes in the geopolitical landscape and enhance the role of technology in the new security strategy.
Experts say that pushing the use of AI and unmanned equipment will help Japan improve reconnaissance, surveillance, and rapid-response capabilities, while reducing risks to soldiers in modern combat scenarios.
