According to a Kyodo News report on June 21, 2026, Japan will formally increase the visa fee for foreign nationals to 15,000 yen, a fivefold hike from the current level. The new rule takes effect in July this year.
The adjustment is part of broader immigration policy changes intended to enhance management efficiency and offset processing costs. The new fee applies to all visa types, including tourist, business, and family visit visas.
Previously, the visa fee for entering Japan was 3,000 yen. The sudden fivefold increase is expected to affect hundreds of thousands of visa applicants annually, particularly foreign tourists and workers.
Experts note the policy may reduce Japan’s appeal as a travel and work destination, though the government maintains the increase is necessary to ensure adequate resources for a more transparent and efficient visa process.
