On July 25, an advisory panel under Japan's Ministry of Labor approved raising the minimum wage for fiscal 2026 (starting April 2026) by an average of 55 yen (about 34 cents) to 1,176 yen per hour, representing a 4.9% increase.
The decision comes amid persistently high living costs in Japan, putting pressure on workers' incomes. This marks the third consecutive year of significant minimum wage adjustments in the country.
Under the procedure, the proposal will be forwarded to Regional Wage Committees in each prefecture and city for discussion to set specific local rates, with implementation expected from October 2026. The increase is expected to improve earnings for ordinary workers, especially amid inflation and rising commodity prices.
