Japan begins first survey for nuclear waste burial site on Honshu

TOKYO — Japan has begun a survey to identify a potential site for burying nuclear waste on Honshu, marking the first time such a survey has been conducted on the country's main island.

Initial information indicates the survey aims to assess the feasibility of building a deep geological repository for high-level nuclear waste, a long-standing issue for Japan.

The Honshu survey is seen as an important step in Japan's search for a nuclear waste burial site, after years of previous surveys that were mainly conducted in other regions.

Details of the specific location and the survey's progress have not been fully disclosed.
